Comic Con: Day 1

Posted on Thursday, July 22nd, 2004 by Me

Well, today was my first day at Comic Con… like my first actual time going ever. I don’t wanna get into too much detail about getting to the Convention Center and back. Let’s just say I have a knack for getting lost. 😛 It’s my first time really driving around on my own in San Diego. Since I got lost on the way there, I ended up getting there about an hour and a half after I left the house even though it should’ve only taken 25 mins. That’s the last time I’m using MapQuest!

I got to the volunteer check-in place at 7:00. I had to wait until around 8:15 to actually get in. Then I had to wait more until 9:30 when my job started. I had the easiest job ever today. 😀 They put me on programming and since most of the programs at Comic Con don’t start until 10, we had some time to just sit around. Well, I didn’t actually get assigned to a room, so me and 4 other people were “floaters” even though we didn’t do very much floating. 😛 We just sat at this round table until our shift was over.

I totally missed a photo op with Tim Thomerson. 🙁 He was just walking around in the programming office (I guess that’s what you’d call it)… the same room I was in. When I saw him, I kept thinking to myself… isn’t that guy an actor?? Then he went around the room introducing himself as “Jack” to a few of the staff members that were working (he didn’t come over to the volunteer table :(). When I heard his voice, I knew I’d heard it before. So I just kept looking at him wondering if he was the dude who played Meleager the Mighty in a few episodes of Xena (hey, I’m a Xena fan here, I don’t know if I’d recognize him if he was from anything else… but definitely from Xena). But since he was calling himself Jack… I was like, that wasn’t the guy’s name.

Then one of the other volunteers asked a staff member a question about “Jack”… I couldn’t really hear what they were saying since they were whispering (I guess the lady asking the question didn’t really want to give it away that he’s famous), but I knew they were talking about him. So the woman on staff was like (I’m paraphrasing here), “Yeah, isn’t it cool to be in the same room with him and not have thousands of people crowding all over him?” And that’s when it really hit me that I was right about him. The woman on staff also said that he was in a program for that day and pointed it out in the schedule.

That’s when I looked in the schedule for all the people named Jack in it. There was only one… Jack Adler or something… and I knew that wasn’t him, so I kept on looking and saw that Tim Thomerson plays this character named Jack Deth in the Trancers movies. But he was no more than 10 feet away from me, and I totally missed that opportunity… especially with not very many people around. Dang. 😐

After three hours of sitting around, our job was over and I went down to the exhibit hall to check out all the stuff. I walked all over the place at least three times. My legs are so sore now. I didn’t really score that much free stuff… but I love this pack of mini playing cards I picked up. I was gonna go back and get a few more for friends, but by the time I went back, they were all out. 🙁

I went to this program about resin casting and mold making because I thought they’d show you how to do it, but it was more for people who already know what they’re doing and want some tips.

And now, here I am typing this… well, after taking some side streets on the way home because the freeway looked bad, but I think I should’ve stayed on the freeway because I probably would’ve gotten home faster. What a day. I’m gonna take a nap!
