This is the only game that I really can’t wait for on the Wii. I loved Smash for the N64 and the Cube. I hope Nintendo doesn’t disappoint with this one. As much as I love Nintendo, I’m kind of thinking that they will disappoint me… in some way.
For instance, since SSBB will be online, it’ll probably use a separate friend code system even though the Wii already has a built-in address book that I’ve already added people to. To have to add people again would be a hassle, especially when friend codes are 12-16 digit numbers.
Also, earlier reports have said that Nintendo wasn’t planning on using the Wii remote’s motion sensing capabilities, that it would use normal controls, similar to the previous games. That’s one of the reasons I like the previous games, for the ease of just being able to pick it up and play. But where I think Nintendo will drop the ball is here… earlier reports have also said that Nintendo was going to make this game compatible with GameCube controllers. This would be excellent news, if it turns out to be reality. I would greatly prefer to use my Wavebird over my Classic Controller.
But think about this… when is the last time you saw a Wavebird available at your local electronics (Circuit City, Best Buy, Fry’s) / game (GameStop, EB, Gamerush) / general merchandise (Target, Wal-Mart) store or even Nintendo’s online store itself? I’ve only seen wired GameCube controllers, if stores even still have any GameCube accessories at all. Not everybody who owns a Wii was a GameCube owner, so not everybody has Cube controllers to use. And with the scarcity of GameCube accessories, I think Nintendo will end up throwing the whole SSBB Cube controller compatibility out the window in favor of the Classic Controller only.
I wouldn’t mind it so much if the Classic Controller wasn’t tethered to my Wii Remote in such an awkward way. I’ll save my ways Nintendo could improve the Classic Controller for another post.
Hopefully SSBB will still be as good as I hope it’ll be, but maybe I shouldn’t get my hopes up to high.
