and why more people should have geeky friends.
A lot of popular services/tools being used today such as GrandCentral/Google Voice, WordPress, Twitter, Facebook, Dimdim, Boxee, uStream, Yahoo Pipes, netbooks, etc. are all things I’ve heard about first from… you guessed it, geeks.
It’s not until after geeks have been using these things for a while is when the rest of the world starts to catch onto whatever it is. I typically see a pattern of geeks first then marketers then celebrities. After celebrities, if there are people who have never heard of whatever it is, if a celebrity even mentions it then that’s when everyone else like your parents & grandparents jump on the bandwagon.
So if you wanna be hip to the latest thing before everyone else, pay attention to the geeks of the world. You’ll hear it from them first. Why? Because geeks are the ones creating the new things, so other geeks are usually the first to be informed about them.
Even though geeks are the first, it’s still amazing to me the kind of following that celebrities have. My mom recently asked me if I was on Twitter, she had no interest in it before, but all of a sudden she’s asking me about it now. And I think it’s all because of Ellen. She hasn’t been on Twitter that long, but as of this post, Ellen has 308,659 followers already (now 308,934 and counting)! That’s incredible! Hopefully it doesn’t cause any Twitter downtimes like there were in the early days from people joining just to follow Ellen.
Anyway, that’s my little insight for the day. Time to geek out!
